Startup Beat: March 2015 Edition
Welcome to Onboardly’s Startup Beat, a roundup of what’s going on in the startup neighborhood. Each month, we put our ears to the ground so we can introduce you to new startups or developments, and why they matter.

Elevator pitch: Slack is “a team communication tool for the 21st century” -- an app that organizes team communication into channels and makes messages searchable whenever, from wherever. In addition to functioning as a standalone tool, Slack integrates with the tools your team is already using - from Asana to Google Drive to GoToMeeting and more.
Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: While Slack is a beautifully designed application dutifully serving its purpose, our real admiration for the startup comes from the way in which it was built -- constant reiteration based entirely on user feedback. A few months after Stewart Butterfield + team began building Slack, the team coaxed companies like Cozy and Rdio to try it out. Seeing how bigger teams used the application drove Slack to innovate further, and vigilant observation helped them constantly improve.
Seven months after its beginning, Slack released a “preview version” on an invite-only basis, generating 8,000 invite requests on the first day. To this day, with each new user and team that signs on, Slack is committed to learning how they use the program and what can make it better - a win-win for both sides. Today, the two-year old startup is valued at over $1B. Suffice it to say, the process works.
Elevator Pitch: With Sameroom, you can bridge two messaging apps (like Slack and Hip Chat) so that your picky team (or clients) don’t have to change their communication preferences. Better yet, you can create a portal for your fans or followers to chat with you regardless of their chat platform. Between creating a portal or a tube, there are two easy solutions to be all on the same page, err, same conversation.
Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: Although Hip Chat has been around for awhile (acquired by Atlassian) and is awesome (we use it at Onboardly) Slack is gaining momentum and with that there will be numerous cross-departmental cohorts, dispersed teams, and clients that will be unwilling to change their chat platform. Sameroom allows them all to get along without having to switch. Let the .gifs role…
Elevator Pitch: With the overall goal of helping people “Learn drums from home. Any topic, any level, anytime”, Drumeo is adding their own beat to the online learning mix. Bringing on new technologies to help support students such as online sheet music, top-quality video production and robust lesson plans for students at all levels, Drumeo is striking up the band (and likely annoying many parents in the process).
Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: Online learning is a huge industry (ahem -- $107B!) and we won’t even get into the earning potential of a top drummer. These two factors alone demonstrate the value of Drumeo on one’s pocketbook.
Beyond the financials though, there is the pure good feelings and positive effects on the good ol’ grey matter that come from learning a new instrument. Taking it a further step, drummers are cited as being smarter than the average person (all the more reason to hire or become one today).
I just learned about @drumeo via @onboardly's #Startup Beat (Tweet this!)
There you have it: our picks for this month. Which startups are you currently interested in or believe have a lot of promise? Are you a hot startup that should be on our radar? Sound off in the comments!
