Startups have a culture you don’t find every day – which probably attributes to why startup jobs are hugely appealing. This culture understands that it takes a lot of work to become something really great – or a lot of hustle, as we like to call it. But we also understand that with hustle, comes the need for a work-life balance.
Most startup founders would agree, sleep is of the lowest priority. Making magic happen is a 24/7 job and there really is no such thing as Monday to Friday. But you don’t see the thousands of startup founders and employees complaining – do you?
That’s because startups understand, probably more than anyone, the importance of work-life balance. Whether it be team building outings or encouraging “workations” – these small bonuses can have a huge impact on their productivity.
Which means you get better results AND a happier employee.
Here are some quick suggestions from us at Onboardly on how to boost productivity and encourage work-life balance.
1. Team Building Outings
If you know you’re going to have a slow day where you and your employees can afford to do the bare minimum, plan a team building outing. Thanks to smartphones, you and your employees can still answer emails or general inquiries, update statuses or Tweet from the great outdoors. Plan a hike at a National Park, a trip to the shore, or visit a local museum or art gallery. Schedule a team lunch where you can discuss current goals or weekly reports. We guarantee just stepping out of the office will brighten the smiles of your employees.
2. Say no to the Punch Clock
Your employees work hard and you know this. So if you’re still monitoring their arrivals and departures like a hawk – maybe it’s time to trust them to fly away from the nest and return on their own. No one likes a late employee but if they’re late because they really needed to stop for that Starbucks latte – it’s probably worth letting it slide. After all, if they didn’t get their latte, their productivity may have taken the hit.
Similarly, trust your employees if they need to skip out of the office for an appointment or leave early if they have a commitment. Chances are, they’ll work from home later that night to make up for it or come in extra early the next morning.
3. Take them with you
If you’re attending a conference or networking event and you can bring an employee or two, do so! Sure you know how to sell your company but we promise, bringing an extremely proud and loyal employee will sell it even further. A happy employee who’s proud to work for you is your best ambassador and it’ll show.
4. Embrace Workations
If an employee wants to go out of town but promises to still have all their work done – trust them. Workations are the new thing and it’s surprisingly easy to get up early and be productive for several hours when you know you can spend the rest of the afternoon exploring a new city or laying by the beach.
When employees love their company, it shows and it’s one of the best forms of free PR you can get. You already know your employees are great – after all, you hired them. Now it’s time to show them how much they’re appreciated. Embrace a work-life balance and watch your company thrive.
