Startup Beat Series: October Edition

Startup Beat Series: October Edition

Welcome to Onboardly’s Startup Beat, a roundup of what’s going on in the startup world this month. Each month, we put our ears to the ground so we can introduce you to new startups or developments, and why they matter. Here is our take for October 2016.

Did we miss something really cool this month? Then tell us in the comments below!

1. Alongside

Elevator Pitch: Alongside takes the pain out of hiring by guiding you along the journey of recruiting, finding, and onboarding new talent. It’s revolutionizing the way in which both candidate and company discover each other.

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: Alongside recently went through a major rebrand. Formerly called Qimple, the name did not do it justice. While they aren’t new, they are definitely noteworthy. Onboardly has been actively using this product for awhile now and without it, we wouldn’t have been able to capture the interest of so many great candidates for the positions we once had available.

2. Trunkster

Elevator pitch: The world’s most revolutionary luggage, featuring zipperless entry for faster access, USB charging, a built-in scale, and location tracking

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: Let me repeat: zipperless, USB charging, location tracking suitcase. Wow!  Not only does this look good, it’s completely functional, easy to use and comes in carry-on size!  If you’re an avid traveler, for work or pleasure, this suitcase will do you justice.

3. Fidget Cube

Elevator Pitch: An unusually addicting, high-quality desk toy designed to help you focus. Fidget at work, in class, and at home in style.

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: While we don’t normally promote any cool new Kickstarter, we couldn’t help but fall in love with what this product is all about. If you are particularly fidgety, as am I (bounce my legs, play with my hair, and move my chair around a lot), then I can see the value in having a small handheld tool to keep my otherwise fidgety nature at bay.

4. Hammond River Brewing

Elevator Pitch: Hammond River Brewing is a nano brewery, located in a little town in New Brunswick, Canada. They have a passion for craft beer and are dedicated to serving top quality, unfiltered, hand-crafted ales to local pubs and restaurants.

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: OK, so you’re probably thinking, “Craft breweries are everywhere now; what makes this one special?” We wondered the same, but our resident Onboardly beer snob informs us that Hammond River Brewing has grown slowly and organically over the last few years, starting out as a tiny brewery in the founder’s home, selling kegs to local bars. They quickly developed a dedicated following for their tasty brews and passion for all things craft beer. As we write this, Hammond River is in the middle of constructing their very own microbrewery at the site of a popular local gastropub. Once the brewery is completed, beer nuts will be able to fill growlers on site, buy bottles of beer to take home or enjoy food served by the gastropub. They also sponsor a local homebrewers competition, nurturing the future of local craft beer. That kind of organic, grassroots growth and community involvement is something we can drink to!

5. Simple Habit

Elevator pitch: 5-minute meditations. Anywhere, anytime.

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: In a chaotic world where we are constantly tempted (and sometimes encouraged) to stay tuned in and wired at all times, Simple Habit is an app that offers five-minute sessions are for young professionals on the go, especially those who are “too busy” or who are skeptical about meditation. Mindfulness is important. We put so much time and effort into physical health – through exercise and dieting – but few of us put time (even just 5 minutes!) into our mental health.

6. ParkWhiz

Elevator pitch: Find perfect parking in the most popular areas of the city

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters:

Who really wants to spend countless minutes circling city blocks trying to find a parking space? Before you even leave your house, you can not only see where there is parking available but also book it! Parkwhiz is available in over 150+ cities including New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.

7. MightyNest

Elevator pitch: MightNest was started to help parents who share the same passion of providing the healthiest home for their families and to live Mighty!

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters:

All of us at Onboardly are parents of either 2 legged or 4 legged mammals. When you become a parent, this sudden realization/fear sets in that everything you do, every decision you make now affects someone else. You start to look at everything with fresh eyes from the food you eat to the material that food is served on, to the soap used on that material. MightyNest is a unique Web site that provides you the ability to research, get advice and buy natural, organic and non-toxic products all in one place. All of the products they sell are free from known toxic ingredients such as: BPA, PVC, Phthalates, Lead, Melamine, Formaldehyde, Flame retardants, Parabens and more. Having one spot to go to for your questions and purchases is just the thing busy parents need!

8. SoloLearn

Elevator Pitch: Everyone Can Code. Learn to code for FREE! Free, fun, effective learning - what can be better?

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: You can now learn to code on the bus while on your morning commute to work! SoloLearn raised $1.2M seed round to socialize mobile code learning. SoloLearn is not aimed at hard-core engineers, but more at “millennials” and students who want a simpler way to learn to code on the go, which includes interactive lessons, coding exercises, peer-to-peer challenges, and community Q&A.

9. See Jane Go

Elevator Pitch: Finally, a ride-hail option designed just for women. Hail, yes!

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: Women can rest easier knowing they’ll be picked up by another fellow gal rather than some random guy. See Jane Go officially launched last month in Orange County, California and plans to expand to four other cities starting this fall. Women are sometimes uncomfortable as drivers and riders using ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft. See Jane Go is addressing the issue by designing the service for women and those who identify as women.

10. In Pursuit Mobile Boutique

Elevator Pitch: The first & only mobile boutique shopping experience on Canada's East Coast!

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: We all know that everyone loves a good food truck. Now imagine a food truck but filled with must-have fashion, accessories, and gifts that travels all over the East Coast. Yeah - we can see you reaching for your wallet in anticipation. Founded in 2013, this pink fashion truck has taken our coast by storm, attending events as a pop-up and selling all items online with incredibly reasonable shipping rates. We believe in In Pursuit because it’s evident mobile retail is the way of the future. People want convenience. Being able to score unique fashion on-the-go? A game changer for any fashionable lady boss.

11. Onehundredforty

Elevator Pitch: Turn tweets into unique design prints.

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: In a world with hundreds of thousands of options for what to decorate your walls with, we love that Onehundredforty is taking the most random but arguably perfect route for any Twitter-obsessed design lover. The concept is simple. Take fun, quirky, smart, nostalgic or embarrassing tweets and turn them into a 100% unique design print. The company uses a tribe of skilled artists from all over the world who contribute with their exclusively created artworks. So, who’s off to order some new wall pieces?

12. OrganiGram

Elevator Pitch: OrganiGram brings Canadians organically produced medicinal cannabis.

Why Onboardly Believes this startup matters: OrganiGram makes our list for October because they’re following through on one of our greatest beliefs. #BreakThePattern. By educating Canadians Organigram is breaking the pattern, or should we say the stigma, behind cannabis and it’s numerous health benefits.

13. Edition Collective

Elevator Pitch: E-commerce startup for web-based fashion forward retailers

Why Onboardly believes this startup matters: Recently acquired by Q Fifty One, the main goal is to build better and more sustainable products and customer experiences on a global scale while remaining fashion forward for men and women of all ages and sizes.
